Project

The Muslim Brotherhood in exile. A content analysis of the Muslim Brotherhood channels based in Turkey.

This project addresses the Muslim Brotherhood’s religious output in exile in Turkey. The Middle East is thoroughly divided along several axes. Islamism, and especially the Muslim Brotherhood, is one of the many dividing factors. After the fall of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood regime in 2013, Brotherhood members formed new divisions in exile in several countries, Turkey amongst others. Research is however inconclusive on ideological developments of these Muslim Brotherhood branches in exile. Furthermore, research has yet to offer an in-depth analysis of the implications of the Muslim Brotherhoods presence on the development of Islamist thinking in the Middle East. In order to address these research gaps, this project will analyse the contents of religious talk shows, produced and aired on satellite channels owned by Muslim Brotherhood members. Analysing these contents from 2011, which marked the start of the Arabic Spring, until 2021 allows for the interpretation of the evolution Muslim Brotherhood thinking underwent in exile. Given the fact that the Muslim Brotherhood is one of the most influential Islamist groups in the Middle East, understanding their recent trajectories is crucial for the correct interpretation of the current day Islamist ideological landscape in the Middle East.
