School platformization: An ethnographic inquiry into policy, pedagogy, and practice

The purpose of this research project is to develop an empirical understanding of how platformization affects school education. Referred to as school platformization, this process emphasizes the localized and context-specific integration of digital platforms within schools, reshaping possibilities in school education and co-determining what is considered educationally relevant. School platformization signifies the increasing significance or infrastructuralization of specific digital platforms in schools, which not only renders school education dependent on particular platforms but also highlights that school platformization is performatively enacted by school actors in practices.

This project employs an ethnographic methodology to explore the operational logic of digital education platforms and their impact on scholastic practices within local school contexts. By empirically investigating the reciprocal relationship between school platformization and school practices, the project aims to articulate the diverse and context-dependent manifestations of school platformization. In doing so, it seeks to address questions regarding the empirical occurrences of platformization in school education, the qualitative study of platformization in practice, and the unique characteristics of school platformization.
