Location aware anonymous routing

Anonymous communication networks route traffic via multiple hops in order to protect metadata. Such multi-hop routing introduces end-to-end latency that can negatively impact the network’s usability, particularly when hops are geographically far away. Location-aware routing addresses this issue by selecting routes that account for geolocation, with the goal of reducing end-to-end latency. At the same time, location-aware route selection may negatively impact the anonymity properties of a network by making routing more deterministic. This PhD project will tackle this problem by proposing and evaluating location-aware routing protocols for anonymity networks that provide adequate privacy-latency tradeoffs.
