Role of multiple mycotoxin exposure on the microbiome-inflammation axis

This PhD project aims to investigate the role of multiple mycotoxin exposure on the gut microbiome-inflammation axis. First, multi-mycotoxin biomarkers of exposure will be characterized and quantified by LC-MS/MS and LC-HRMS in human biological fluids from two Flemish cohorts in a wide age range. Subsequently, exposure profiles of multi-mycotoxin biomarkers will be studied to investigate their link with alterations of the gut microbiota, chronic low-grade gut inflammation and related biological processes and diseases. Finally, specific associations between multi-mycotoxin exposure, the gut microbiome and chronic low-grade gut inflammation will be validated in international cohorts.
