Pardon letters in the South of the Low Countries

Pardon letters offer compelling insight into the rhetoric and leverage of both rulers and their subjects. Between the fifteenth and seventeenth century, they also mirror an amount of secular, religious, popular changes occurring. They thus offer an additional means to portray modern society in the South of the Low Countries under distinct rulers. This thesis will look into various perspectives, tropes and evolutions within these letters.
