The reversal of Spinoza, in the spirit of Machiavelli

Book Contribution - Chapter

Through a close reading of the TP of Spinoza, the concrete source of Machiavelli's texts is traced to demonstrate the role and significance of the concept of multitude in the texts of these two authors. Spinoza is operating, along the example of Machiavelli, a reversal of significance, and so we can talk about a swerve, a crucial point of passage towards modernity, towards modern political thought and real democracy.
