Project

Non-intrusive load cell for the mechatronic industry

This project has the ambition to support the last step towards launching a Spin-Off company, which will support companies that are active in the design and exploitation of mechatronic systems by providing them sensors to non-intrusively measure attributes of key interest, such as mechanical loads. More particularly, the focus is on mechanical drivetrains of vehicles and machines where fast movements are occurring. In such cases the mechanical loads drive the performance, lifetime, energy efficiency and cost of the design. The applicants of this IOF trajectory propose an innovative concept for a non-intrusive load sensor which is more accurate/reliable and faster to implement compared to strain gauges and far less intrusive then common load cells. The prototype and first steps towards business plan were developed during a recently finished VLAIO innovation mandate. The ambition within this IOF trajectory is to (i) further attract industrial interest by demonstration on-site at key stakeholders like Picanol and Toyota, and to (ii) further develop the business plan to subsequently start the Spin-Off.
