Culturele waarden in het nieuws: een vergelijkende inhoudsanalyse van nieuws over de Islam in de Europese pers.

Media systems are in essence national systems. Accordingly, differences between media systems might be explained using structural and cultural differences between countries. This theme, that receives growing research interest within communication science, do we want to elaborate in our research project. Our case-study will be the newspaper and television coverage of Islam in 12 European countries, as the relationship between Islam and the native culture is a common cultural theme in all these countries. We will compare the impact of national cultural values with the impact of structural elements as investigated in prior research based on the work of Daniel Hallin and Paolo Mancini in their book "Comparing Media Systems" and with the impact of national political thoughts on immigration. To fully understand the impact of these (cultural, structural, political) elements we will use a multimethodical research design that combines quantitative content analysis, critical discourse analysis and expert interviews.
