Project

Data over Plastics.

This proposal will focus on datatransmission of RF waves through cheap plastic fibers like polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene. The novel communications concept, that merges the benefits of wireline, wireless and optical, has great potential in markets requiring low-cost high-to-medium speed (going up to 20GHz and more) communication over medium distances (going up to 20m and more), where existing technologies are not good enough. Examples and specific cases can be found in the automotive, next-generation USB and infrastructure markets. Although the feasibility of the concept has been demonstrated in a lab setup, various issues, mostly related to the 'combined' optimisation of plastics, electronics and coupling still need to be investigated before the technology can actually be introduced into these markets. As such, by bringing together expertise on electronics, electromagnetism and plastics this project will try to find an answer to these research questions and prepare the technology for take-up by Industry.
