Determination of the sound reflection index of noise barriers: guidelines to improve the measurement accuracy

Book Contribution - Book Chapter Conference Contribution

As technology is advancing, and as experience with field measurements is gained, also the technical norms describing the procedure to carry out the assessment of the sound reflection index of noise barriers are in constant evolution. This paper reports on experimental results gathered during a series of measurements on a variety of noise barriers, in the framework of the EU Quiesst project. A summary is given on the encountered pitfalls, and a proposal is formulated on how to counter these proactively via a dedicated measurement procedure, and a posteriori by means of adequate post-processing algorithms. The analysis also leads to conclusions about the current, and ultimate intrinsic accuracy limits of sound reflection measurements for given circumstances.
