The Conciliar Experience: The Participation of the Peruvian Episcopate in the Second Vatican Council and the First Conciliar Reception (1960-1968)
The study focuses on the participation of the Peruvian prelates in the Second Vatican Council, and the first years of the conciliar reception (1960-1968). Through the historical-theological category “conciliar experience” which refers to the prelates’ different attitudes towards the conciliar doctrinal and pastoral changes, the project studies their contribution in conciliar commissions, their interventions in aula, their participation in episcopal networks, and doctrinal and theological stances. The “conciliar experience” of the Peruvian episcopate had a large impact on the reception of Vatican II. Before the “normative” hermeneutic of Vatican II imposed by Medellín after 1968, the first reception showed how the Peruvian Council Fathers understood and implemented the Council.
