Full Carbon Utilization: Conversion of abundant Flemish waste streams into platform chemicals using advanced separation and catalytic technologies

In line with the objectives of MOT1, in particular the development of sustainable technology to switch from fossil to biomass-based raw materials, FUCATIL will develop the bio-based synthesis of high-quality renewable chemicals from available carbohydrates in abundant Flemish side streams. This using a platform of high-performance yeast strains and fermentation strategies with in situ product purification, electrochemistry and chemo-enzymatic conversion. With a view to maximum valorization of the abundant side streams, the focus in FUCATIL is on major industrial chemicals: acrylonitrile (ACN) and purified terephthalic acid (PTA) as building blocks for large-scale bulk polymers and trimellitic acid (TMA) as 'specialty chemical' and precursor to performance polymers and polymer additives.
