Use of mixed recycled aggregate powders as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs)

Adding mineral additive, mainly industry by-products such as fly ash, is regarded as an efficient and eco-friendly method to producing High Performance Concrete (HPC), which has received massive concerns. However, in engineering practice, the high price and limited source of mineral additives have set some limitations on its application. At the meantime, the disposal of solid waste generated from construction and demolition has become a major concern. It not only consumes land, but also pollute the environment. Based on the chemical composition analysis, some solid waste, such as bricks, contains high proportion of aluminosilicate minerals which shows the potential to form alumina-silicate gel system. This research aims at exploring the feasibility of using ground mixed recycled aggregates to as an alternative mineral additive for HPC. So, the workability, mechanical, durability and microstructural properties of the HPC added with recycled powder will be studied.
