OR4Logistics (R-11453)

The logistics industry plays a key role in today's economy. A prompt and efficient distribution of goods is demanded by industrial partners and end customers in commercial transactions. Also in the healthcare sector and in emergency relief operations an efficient logistics system is vital. However, the logistics industry is a very competitive market with small profit margins and is facing an increasing pressure to work in an environmentally sustainable way. Operations research (OR) as a research discipline supports problem-solving and decision-making that are useful in the management of organizations. Many OR models have already been developed to support the logistics sector, but few have been absorbed in the daily operations of logistics companies. This is due to the fact that the logistics reality has become increasingly complex and many real-life characteristics are still missing in existing OR models. This WOG brings together a large network of renowned experts in the OR community that are working on real-world logistics optimization problems. By sharing knowledge we can contribute to closing that gap between research and practice and have a significant impact on the efficiency and sustainability of the logistics sector. Applications drive research and often require solving ever larger and more complex models of real-world optimization problems
