Wout Saelens

    Wout Saelens is a postdoctoral researcher affiliated with the Centre for Urban History at the University of Antwerp and the HOST research group of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He studied medieval history at the University of Ghent (2015) and obtained in 2021 his PhD at the University of Antwerp and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel with a dissertation on domestic energy consumption and material culture in early modern Ghent and Leiden. He is currently working on the social and political conflicts behind the transition to coal and the problems of smoke pollution in the industrial city of the nineteenth century.
