Chrysostom as Exegete: Scholarly Techniques and Traditions in the Homilies on Genesis

Book - Dissertation

This dissertation assesses John Chrysostom#s Homiliae in Genesim I-XVII(PG 53.21-54.580; CPG 4409) amidst the development of Patristic exegesis of Genesis 1-3. In order to assess the homilies in historical context,we consider not only text critical and philological issues but also John Chrysostom#s adaption (or rejection) and interrelation of five features of influence in each homily: (1) Patristic Christian biblical exegetical strategies; (2) Patristic Christian doctrine; (3) Pagan exegetical methods of culturally #sacred# texts (e.g. Plato#s Timaeus or Homer#sOdyssey); (4) Pagan philosophical claims; (5) Rhetorical techniques deployed for integration and communication of the above themes. We show thedynamic coherence of these features in the homilies and assess the effect of his teaching on his Lenten 388 C.E. Antiochene audience.
