Phase field modelling of grain orientation dependent corrosion

Corrosion affects metals’ durability and has economic consequences. To increase metals’ sustainability, thorough knowledge and fundamental understanding of corrosion is crucial. The macroscopic behaviour of a material is often determined by the structure of the material on microscopic level (the microstructure). This microstructure is determined by the processing parameters. Modelling is the mathematical description of a certain phenomenon. In practice, for microstructural modelling, the material is fictionally divided in very small volume elements and, in each of these elements, algorithms, which are constructed from the equations that describe the relevant phenomena, are executed. The phase field method is a modelling technique with a lot of advantages when considering complex microstructures. Until recently, most of the phase field models of corrosion did not really consider the influence of the grain orientation. In the proposed work, metal corrosion systems and the reactions therein will be modelled with the phase field method, including this influence. Experimental work will help to obtain input parameters and to validate this innovative model concept. By comparing the simulation with experimental results, an improved understanding of the underlying physical mechanisms can be obtained.
