Design and Modelling of 12/4 Fully-Pitched Segmental Switched Reluctance Motors

Book Contribution - Book Chapter Conference Contribution

This paper proposes a six-phase 12/4 fullypitched segmental rotor type switched reluctance motor (SRM). The rotor of the proposed structure is constructed from two groups of discrete silicon steel segments. Each group has two segments. These silicon steel segments are attached to the aluminium rotor support block. One group of segments is shifted by 15 degrees from the other one to reduce the torque ripples. Although a shifted rotor is a multi-stack 3D structure, the proposed segmental SRM with shifted rotor keeps the 2D structure. In addition, Finite Element Method (FEM) is used to model and analyze these SRMs. Then, MATLAB Simulink is used to obtain the static and dynamic characteristics of the referenced and proposed SRMs to verify the proposed segmental SRM. The simulation result shows that the torque density is increased by 29.3%, and the torque ripple ratio can be reduced by 6.5% at the rated conditions.
