The use of artificial intelligence in diabetic retinopathy screening

Due to the aging of the population, the prevalence of diabetes mellitus is continously rising. One of it's important complications is diabetic retinopathy. Since this complication is not noticed by the patient untill it reaches a severe stage, annual screening is necessary. However, the increasing number of patients puts a strain on our current screening regimens. New innovations such as high quality digital retinal images and the use of artificial intelligence can help ophtalmologists keep up with the demand. The goal of this research project is to develop an AI-aided screening tool and implement it in a screening program for diabetic retinopathy.
