Project

Welbevinden van Vlaamse landbouwers en hun gezinnen (WELBEVINDEN)

Main research question/goal

The aim of this research is to gain insight in the well-being of Flemish farmers and their families through three central research questions: (1) Are there business-economic and/or demographic characteristics of an agricultural business/family that have an impact on well-being?; (2) Which are the stress factors related to the farming context? And how do they interact with each other?; (3) Which strategies do farmers and their families use to deal with these stress factors?

Research approach

To respond to the research questions, both surveys will be developed and in-depth interviews or focus groups will be organized. For the first research question, a survey will be developed that questions a representative group of farmers. For the second and third research question both a survey will be done and in-depth interviews/focus groups will be conducted with farmers and their spouses.

Relevance/Valorisation

In a variety of ways, the well-being of farmers and their families is under increasing pressure. There is therefore a growing need for professional help adapted to the context of the agricultural sector. This research can raise the awareness around this issue through the building of a network of experts, publications in professional and scientific journals, and the dissemination of the results through presentations and through the media. Furthermore, the generated insights will be used to pro-actively reflect on how best assist farmers experiencing difficulties.
