Coupling between mesoscale weather systems and offshore wind farms

An operating windmill creates a turbulent wake. This can result in an efficiency loss of up to 80% for some windmills in a wind farm. Recently it has been shown that wind farms interact with the atmospheric boundary layer on a mesoscopic scale (tens of kilometres). In our research we try to bridge the gap between the micro scale effects (the generation of turbulence) and the meso scale in order to construct a better numerical model for a wind farm. This model will be used to determine the optimal configuration of a wind farm.
