STaR-chip, the ultimate biometric identification check (STaR-chip)

DNA profiling offers the most reliable and precise method of identity matching. However, the relatively high cost, duration and complexity have so far prevented its uptake beyond forensics. We here propose a tool to perform rapid and on-site DNA fingerprinting. As is the case for the forensic gold standard, a unique DNA profile will be generated, typically from a buccal swab. The aim of this project is to mature the proposed rapid forensic DNA chip technology already developed at Ghent University in collaboration with Imec. A leading European forensic service provider has already agreed to beta-test the technology. This IOF proposal will allow us to accelerate time to market by effectively bridging the gap between the research phase and the industrialization phase. Substantial attention will be paid to the development of a sound business and financial strategy/plan in order to attract venture capital for the launch of spin-off company.
