Sabbatical Geert Brône: Developing a research program on eye gaze in face-to-face interaction

In recent years I, together with colleagues from my research group and in various interdisciplinary partnerships, have been working on a methodological testing ground for the study of viewing behavior in face-to-face interaction, using mobile eye-tracking technology. This method plays a central role in: (a) an ongoing KUL-C1 project of which I am the PI and will be completed in September 2020 (project no. 3H160232: “Eye gaze in multimodal interaction management. An interdisciplinary study on speech, music and signed language ”), and (b) international projects and networks for which I have been asked as an international partner (e.g. a project with A. Stukenbrock at the Université de Lausanne, a project with Prof. dr. A. Cienki to the State Linguistic University in Moscow and a multidisciplinary research lab with Prof. dr. P. Auer at the Universität Freiburg). The expiry of the aforementioned C1 project in September 2020 offers the perfect moment for one Sabbath period, in which I want to use the released research time to the maximum development of the eye-tracking method into a full-fledged research program. Specifically will I fill in the Sabbath period with: (a) short research stays in Lausanne and Moscow (2 weeks each) with a view to the intensification of project cooperation and realization of joint publications; (b) the valorisation of the expiring C1 project (publications with project partners, preparation of a monograph); (c) the preparation of follow-up research in the form of project and mandate applications (KUL C1 / C2, FWO project, ERC grant); (d) exploring the possibilities for setting up an international (training) network (eg. Marie Curie Sklodowska ITN) on multimodal interaction analysis (and in particular eye-tracking for interaction analysis). The first preparations for this have already been made (eg doctoral school around "eye gaze in interaction" in Bern, in which I will teach in May 2020).
