Project

Comparatives under the Microscope (COMIC)

The project will investigate the hypothesis that there is more morphological, syntactic, and semantic complexity to adjectival comparative constructions than is conventionally assumed. WP1 (PhD1) will investigate the morphology of the comparative marker, taking as its starting point recent work suggesting that this marking is morphologically complex. WP2 (PhD2) will look at the syntax of the comparative, more specifically variation in the shape and distribution of the marker of the comparative standard. WP3 (postdoc) will develop a semantic analysis of comparatives that incorporates the morphological and syntactic findings of WP1 and WP2. WP4 (postdoc + 3 PIs) will take the results from the morphological, syntactic, and semantic studies to develop an integrated analysis of adjectival comparatives.
