Project

Satire and the Law in the Eighteenth Century.

This project studies how the law shaped both verbal and visual satire published in England during its "Golden Age" (1660-1740) and across the "long" 18th century (1660-1840). The project will focus on the prosecution of satirists and their publishers and track how these trials and the debates
surrounding them fundamentally influenced both the growth and public perception of press freedom.
