Predictable Integrity of Large Scale Additive Manufactured Components through Intelligent Printing Strategies

The international state of the art in the field of wire-based 3D printing (Wire & Arc Additive Manufacturing WAAM) of large-scale steel components mainly focuses on achieving the desired geometry rather than the desired structural properties through meticulous control of the microstructure . Therefore, the project aims to develop both the missing modeling competences as well as the experimental testing capabilities that can facilitate rapid industrialization of WAAM for reliable and cost efficient production of structural safety components. In this way, the project directly contributes to a reduction in costs on the one hand by reducing delivery times and on the other by reducing the costs of storage and transport of spare parts. The WAAM project also extends the useful economic life of obsolete industrial installations by producing components on site or on demand for which spare parts are no longer available.
