BriskSim: Efficient Simulation of Power Electronic Transients in Modern Power Systems

In modern power grids, the role of power electronic converters is growing rapidly to facilitate the integration of renewable energy sources, battery storage, and high-voltage dc transmission technology. In the power systems industry, electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation tools have been intensively used for over 50 years to replicate electrical waveform behaviour of an actual electrical power system under various disturbance conditions. Detailed and extensive simulations of interactions with power electronic converters become increasingly more important. However, the computational bottleneck associated with processing recurring power electronic switch events currently renders such simulations impractical with conventional tools unless accuracy is sacrificed. In this project, we aim to develop a prototype of a novel numerical solver designed to enable accurate simulation of power electronic transients in power systems in reasonable time. The prototype, benchmarked with practical use cases, serves as a demonstrator towards industry.
