Project

Dissensus and Connection as Artistic Tactics. A research on visual arts as a space for political subjectification

My PhD project aims to shed light on tactics of 1/dissensus and 2/connection. Doing so, it wants to contribute to the development of different democratising spaces of showing and togetherness. My starting point is the observation of e.g. Isabell Lorey that our late capitalistic society is governed through precarity and individualisation. The purpose of my research is to refine the discourse of the arts utility by investigating its possibilities to generate and spread new political subjects.

In a first research phase a ‘space of showing’ (a studio) will be set up with diverse people who find themselves in a form of precarity (an artist, a researcher, a cleaning-person, a refugee, a sex worker …). Based on the specificity of each one’s precarity and by experimenting with different tactics of dissensus and connection, educational processes will be entered into. In a second research phase diverse ways of translating and rendering these processes will be tried out. This should lead to autonomous documents/installation-works which try to provide insights in the central research topic.
