Patriotten en confraters : de Belgische notarissen en de Eerste Wereldoorlog

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

The World War One commemoration ignited several initiatives on a local, national and international level. Belgian legal historians remained rather at the sideline particularly on the impact of the war on the legal professionals. Although the occupation shattered daily life, it did not automatically bring life to a halt. The Germans urged institutions such as courts and administrations to work as normal as possible. Hence legal actors, such as notaries performed their duties during the occupation. This contribution searches the consequences of World War One on Belgian notaries and the way the conflict re-determined the role of the notary during as well as after the war. What practical issues did notaries have to deal with during the occupation? What legal problems did they face?
