Multiscale characterization of glass wools using X-ray micro-CT

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

Glass wool is a fibrous material with many applications in construction. The present work compares the acoustic properties of two types of glass wool a dense and less dense one. A combination of X-ray micro-CT and simulation was used to characterize the pore structure and acoustic behavior respectively. Based on high-resolution images, we were able to non-destructively achieve quantitative 3D information on the pore network and characteristics of fibers inside glass wool. Compared to experimental measurements, it is shown that better results are obtained with scans at 1 mu m/voxel, especially on fibers diameter and characteristics lengths.
