Field-scale CFD modeling of spray application in orchards

The aim of orchard spraying is to accurately place the correct amount of plant protection products on the intended target. However, due to wind a significant amount of spray may move beyond the target canopy and cause environmental pollution. Optimizing the orchard spraying process involves a continuous balance between maximizing biological efficacy, and minimizing environmental pollution and residues. We have recently developed a Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to predict the complex interaction between the various parameters involved in orchard spraying for better control and optimization of spray applications. The model integrated the real tree architecture with turbulent air and spray flow around few orchard trees at the edge of the field and predicts the on‐tree deposition and  off-tree spray drift profiles next to the field. The model will be elaborated in this PhD research to the scale of the complete orchard in order to better capture real scale drift issues while incorporating  orchard tree structure, landscape topography and atmospheric wind profiles based on aerial images  obtained with drones and lidar data.
