The Objectives and Initiatives of VEFO, the Flemish Network for Contemporary Philosophy Education

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

In the Flemish community, philosophy and philosophizing only have a marginal place in education. For already more than 25 years, several academics and teachers have argued in favor of philosophizing in Flemish primary and secondary education and in favor of a structural place for philosophy as an autonomous school subject in the curriculum of the third level of secondary education. VEFO (Vlaams Netwerk voor Eigentijds Filosofieonderwijs / Flemish Network for Contemporary Philosophy Education) is an association, founded ca. 20 years ago, that aims for more and better philosophy education in the Flemish Community. In this contribution I first briefly present the place of philosophy and philosophizing in Flemish education (§ 1). Then I deal with the foundation and development of VEFO (§ 2) and with its objectives (§ 3). Finally, I give a detailed survey of the initiatives of the association (§ 4).
