INNOMAT :Innovation of mattresses in the R & D and the end-of-life phase (R-5891)

Mattresses are not just for the Flemish economy, but also for social welfare (contribution to a good night's sleep) key products. Mattresses are however voluminous and often complex composite products. Innovation projects were in this sector in recent years focused on improving the sleeping comfort and on adding additional functionalities (eg. Anti-allergic properties). Recently, also the sustainability aspects get more attention. The average lifespan of a mattress is approximately 12 years. The annual EOL mattress flow is in volume significant enough to determine whether these waste flows can be selectively collected and converted into interesting material streams. In order for the mattress sector to close effectively the material cycles in a sustainable manner, additional research should be done. Indeed, the proposed solutions should be acceptable to all stakeholders: companies (suppliers, mattress manufacturers, recyclers), end consumers and government. For companies, the proposed solutions should be technically and economically viable. Consumers will not lose sleep comfort and hygiene and will preferably pay no additional cost if they don't receive enhanced product features in return. The government wants to reduce the environmental impact of the current production.
