Visualisation tools and analytics to monitor online language learning & teaching (R-6353)

This project proposal's aim is to demonstrate the potential of learning analytics to improve learning and teaching practises with the use of digital tools on the basis of 4 different distance and blended learning practises. Learning analytics offers great opportunities to better understand concrete learning behaviour and uses of electronic courseware and online resources and can provide a rich source of information on all aggregate levels: not only to the students and their lecturers themselves but also to the institution and the course developers and even on policy-level. The innovative tools to be developed by the project are believed to be of great support to learners and educational staff to improve the use of ICT for learning and self-regulation skills as well as to acquire the related digital competences they will need for continued (formal and non-formal) lifelong learning. The learning analytics tools developed by the project will also allow educational staff to detect struggling students in a much earlier stage and to take appropriate measures for those students who experience difficulties with the required autonomous learning skills associated with higher education. They can thereby help to reduce dropout rates or to increase attainment levels in HE. The partnership itself, composed by 3 universities and a private open source company, characterises by close, effective links between education, research, and innovation - the three sides of the 'knowledge triangle'. The project's goal is to improve the quality of technology-enabled education based on research specifically focussed on the collection and scientific analysis of educational data and using open innovative technology that not only provides new research techniques but at the same time enables us to visualise the data in a format suited for non-specialist interpretation, and present them directly to the end users, being the students and their instructors.
