Large Parks: Resilience and ecological practice for flooded areas (R-7730)

Common flood resistance solutions, such as flood-control infrastructure, do not provide a reliable mitigation approach to long-term flood safety in the face of climate change uncertainties. Modern cities around the world remain vulnerable to flood hazards. A new approach combines the concept of resilience and ecological urbanism into, so called "Large park resiliency". "Large park resiliency" is the ability of large parks and open spaces to cope with flooding. Building resiliency into parks requires both technical measures and the creation of a community-wide protection plan. For this reason, the research will focus on both the social and ecological aspects of resilience. The objective of the research is to 1) develop a theoretical framework on large park resiliency; and 2) apply this framework to 2 case studies suffering from regular flooding. The two case studies are located in the Binh Chanh, District 7, Nha Be and in the Can Gio Province. The research will begin with an analysis of international cases, and then conduct social-ecological analysis of the cases. The research will result in both a theoretical framework and practical recommendations to build resiliency into parks with a focus on engaging local communities.
