Project

Company Focused monitoring and analysis of risk in agriculture (R-1997)

The project is situated within the research line ─environmental economics┌ of the faculty of Business Economics and within the Centre for Environmental Sciences of Hasselt University. Risk as a decision factor in sustainable farm management is nowadays more relevant than ever. Therefore, this project aims to develop a risk management and analysis tool in cooperation with the Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research (ILVO, project promotor). This practical and scientific tool will be developed at farm level and support farm sustainability. Content: Volatility of output prices and increasing input costs raise risk and decrease profit margins at farm level. What is the impact of changing market conditions on farm level risk? How will new environmental- and animal friendly production systems influence yields and risk? What is the state of the financial risk of a farm? A tool to understand and analyze these concepts is currently missing. Such a tool is necessary to identify risk at farm level and support farm decision making towards sustainability. It should incorporate farm specific information and be applicable in practice. The target group consists of all farmers, with no distinction between agricultural and horticultural activities. Other relevant stakeholders are farm advice, - service and - external risk management sectors.
