Project

System and service network design in intermodal freight transport. (R-1326)

The doctorate aims to examine inter-modal transport networks and modeling based on quantitative techniques from operational research. Intermodal transport chains are formed by multiple transport modes and multiple actors. This creates planning problems with increased complexity. Specifically, the taking into account of the flow of goods existing of empty freight units throughout the planning process, is studied. The focus is on continental intermodal networks that include inland shipping. The following three objectives are pursued: 1. Studying the system design of intermodal transport networks 2. Modeling of service networks in intermodal transport 3. Repositioning of empty freight units
