The Cultivation and Conversion of SeaWeed InTo high value bio-based CHemicals and biofuels (CC-SWITCH)

CC-SWITCH will follow an interdisciplinary approach in which various aspects required to boost the utilization of seaweed in biorefinery applications will be studied. A full evaluation of suitable seaweed species will be included, as well as the evaluation of novel, state-of-the-art materials that can withstand the harsh corrosive marine environment during their cultivation. As for biomass conversion, emphasis will be on the development of innovative extraction and conversion processes for the production of high value bio-based chemicals and biofuels. These conversion technologies will be evaluated towards the production of several high potential bio-based platform chemicals such as hydroxymethylfurfural, levulinic acid and furfural.
