Monitoring of self-healing activation by means of Acoustic Emission and digital image correlation

Book Contribution - Book Chapter Conference Contribution

In self-healing of concrete it is necessary to know if the self-healing is activated. With Acoustic Emission (AE), a Non-Destructive Technique (NDT), this can be observed. AE measurements need to be described and compared to realize the possibility of using AE as a useful technique. A comparative study between mortar beams with glass capsules, glass-IPC-coated capsules and gelatin-IPC coated capsules was conducted. By means of three-point bending, the beams were loaded until failure by one predominant crack going through the self-healing capsule, to confirm this Digital Image Correlation (DIC) was used to measure the strain-field. This document summarizes results of this comparative study, including the experimental setup, the used sensors and the AE-signal output analysis. It was observed that AE in combination with DIC serves as good methods to detect the activation of self-healing and that AE therefore is a promising and useful NDT in the field of self-healing concrete.
