Non-invasive prenatal tests: research on the attitudes of pregnant and young mothers in Flanders.

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

Before undergoing prenatal invasive testing, NIPT offers pregnant women with an increased risk of having a child with trisomy 21, 18 or 13 the possibility of receiving more information about the presence or absence of specific conditions in the fetus. This study shows that 60% of the respondents would be inclined to follow their doctor's recommendations about which test to undergo (NIPT or invasive test). For that reason it is important for physicians to pay sufficient attention to informed choice and a non-directive counseling. Prospective parents should feel sufficiently challenged to inform themselves and to make a choice which reflects their own preferences and values.
