Éthique du multilinguisme

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

The world, as a meaningful place, is always symbolically mediated, more specifically by language. Therefore, understanding and considering the otherness of the Other in the world through signalling processes is the challenge of any ethics. The interest in a hermeneutics of difference and strangeness, articulated on the linguistic pluralism of literary texts, is at the centre of literary studies and translation studies since the cultural shift (Radaelli 2011). A communicative ethics of conversation, of a willing-to-understand-the-other as translation, makes Zafer Şenocak affirm: "Any conversation intending to be more than a meeting of monologues, is a translation" (2011:17). To understand the Other, it is necessary to trust in his honesty, and this understanding always depends on language, as Hans-Georg Gadamer emphasizes in his philosophy of hermeneutics of language Truth and Method. Language always acts as the "horizon of a hermeneutical experience of being" (Stolze 2003:71), also of the other and of his linguisticity.
