KINETIC

Mobility systems are being reshaped due to major transitions in key sectors (circular economy, digitisation, demographic trends, etc.). Planning concepts for urban mobility have been introduced (SUMPs) and, despite their challenges, are effective in promoting sustainable urban mobility. Meanwhile, planners and researchers have spotted the need for a broader scope in planning.
Transferring the SUMP concept in complex metropolitan areas, is not something easy to achieve. KINETIC brings together a multidisciplinary consortium to introduce a mix of new ideas and approaches and provide evidence for Sustainable Regional Mobility Planning (SRMP). Through a bottom-up approach, we integrate local communities and harmonise their mobility visions with a view to facilitate the transfer of SUMP and its citizen-oriented nature, from the urban to the regional planning level. Cross-discipline teams supported by data-driven spatial and mobility analytics and by a set of other tools will define a shared mobility vision and measures that promote intermodality and connectivity between urban and rural areas, and bring regions closer to sustainability goals (e.g.
congestion, inclusion, health). KINETIC blends traditional measures with opportunities offered by technology (EGNOS, Blockchain) and behavioural science and creates low cost and light touch sustainable mobility measures that are easily replicable across multiple scales and contexts. KINETIC measures are tested in 5 metropolitan areas in pilots that result in real elaboration/adaptation of SRMPs. Working in parallel, the project introduces an agile impact assessment framework that is easily implementable by planners and can capture a wide range of mobility, socio-economic, environmental and behavioural aspects. KINETIC devotes its last mile to transferring its results, through policy activities towards the introduction of a coordinated, mobility-innovation enabling urban, regional, national and EU policy frame.
