Project

Deep mapping van begravingspraktijken in Hellenistisch (4de-1ste eeuw v. Chr.) en Romeins Keizerlijk (1ste-5de eeuw n. Chr.) Sagalassos.

The proposed postdoctoral research wishes to use burial data to identify recurrent mortuary customs, and explain how these were formed, maintained and changed. To conduct such research, high-quality datasets which combine local variation and broader underlying traditions, are required. As a result, this proposal will target the ancient site of Sagalassos (SW Turkey) and focus on two time periods which are known for their varied burial practices: Hellenistic (4th-1st century BC) and Roman Imperial times (1st-5th century AD). Several hypotheses on the transitions between cremation and inhumation, as well as on the advent and disappearance of monumental tomb architecture will play a central role in this study. Through data-analysis, these hypotheses will be evaluated to explain which members of society gave shape to the world of the dead, and which processes formed the ruling mortuary traditions.
