Project

BruSOL: Sensitization, information and activation of pupils and teachers from secondary education in Brussels on the theme of soil.

The aim of this project is sensitization and awareness rising of secondary school teachers and students with respect to 'soil'. The project follows a stepwise approach: (1) In January 2016, a teachers (chemistry & geography teachers) training session on different aspects of soil is organized: ecosystem services/soil functions, threats to soils, sustainable management of soils. Didactic materials for this training session are demonstrated andprovided for use in the classroom, (2) In February-April 2016, teachers introduce the topic of 'soil' in the class. Then the students select sampling locations, take soil samples and perform chemical analyses (pH, nitrate, potassium, and phosphate in soil extracts; determination of acid neutralizing capacity). Part of each sample is also sent out for analysis in a lab (major and trace elements) (3) Feedback on the results is given during a closing event.
