Gas-phase model systems for hydrogen storage

Journal Contribution - Journal Article

This article explains the concept of a hydrogen economy, and how it could resolve the intermittency problem that limits the share of renewables in our energy supply. The three main components of a hydrogen economy, i.e. hydrogen generation, hydrogen storage and hydrogen re-electrification, are introduced and examples of contemporary research in the field of gas-phase chemical physics for the storage component are given. The aim of this article is to show that, by studying simplified models, a mechanistic understanding of the underlying physical and chemical processes can be obtained. Such an understanding will inspire and enable the design of novel materials needed for advancing a hydrogen economy.
