Microscopy as corner stone of the Earth Sciences: study of the building blocks of the Earth with reflected and transmitted light

Light microscopy takes a pivotal position in the research procedures in Earth Sciences at the Department of Geology at UGent. It is of high importance since it forms the basic research step prior to the application of more advanced and costly multi-instrumental mineralogical, palaeontological and geochemical analyses. To obtain high-quality analyses, good sample preparation is a prerequisite, which implies the necessary equipment.
