Project

De memorie van de deught wordt door de Poësije verlenght. Literature of rhetoricians in het Southern Netherlands in the second half of the 17th century. The works of rhetorician Cornelis de Bie from Lier as case study.

This project forms an important continuation and correction of the mainly socio-historical research that has been conducted the last few years (viz. in the scope of a VNC-project) on the culture of rhetoricians in the Northern and Southern Netherlands in the period 1450-1650. The project is aimed at the specific nature of the activities of the rhetoricians after 1650 in the Southern Netherlands. The actual literary production will be explicitly included. In this way, a new and sharper image of the proper dynamics of the culture of rhetoricians in the second half of the17th century will be drawn. A case study will form the steppingstone and this case will be embedded in the broader cultural context and the context of the literary history. The oeuvre of Cornelis de Bie (notary and rhetorician of Lier; chamber De Groeyende Boom</>) forms a privileged corpus. De Bie was engaged in the literary life from a small town in the periphery of the literary system of the larger cities such as Antwerp and Brussels. It is precisely this border traffic which offers exceptional challenges to this research. De Bie was not only a prolific writer of a very diverse oeuvre, he also disposed of an extended intellectual network. Moreover, he explicitly wanted to compete with the Northern Netherlands ans we was abreast of the international cultural developments.
