Education Democracy and the Legacy of Conflict: Prospects and Challenges of History and Civic Education in Indonesia

The research project “Education, Democracy and the Legacy of Conflict: Prospects and Challenges of History and Civic Education in Indonesia” is conducted to address the following questions: (1) How are the legacies and histories of conflict as well as the subject of civic education integrated into Indonesia’s secondary school curriculum?; (2) How are Indonesian secondary school teachers being trained to address the legacies and histories of conflict and to teach the subject of civic education in their classrooms?; (3) What are Indonesian secondary school teachers’ attitudes and behaviour towards addressing the legacies of conflict and the subject of civic education in the classroom?. The study will take a multi-method approach to data collection and analysis; with curriculum analysis being a key method for answering the research questions in the curriculum-cluster; analysis of teacher training programmes and in-depth interviews with a range of educational stakeholders being essential to answering the research questions in the second research cluster; and, the implementation of a large-scale survey among secondary school teachers being at the heart of the third research cluster.
