Essays in Competition and Innovation

In my PhD I aim to explore the relationship between competition and innovation from its various angles. On the one hand, I’m interested in the aggregate impact of competition on innovation, with the implications of theoretical models and the results from empirical studies currently providing inconclusive insights. I intend to further build upon my prior work, where I explored the relationship between competition and innovation by studying the impact of the EU market liberalisation on innovation. On the other hand, I am also interested in firm-level strategic decisions that drive innovation. For example, I would like to investigate the challenges related to competition in digital sectors, particularly how the strategic decisions of firms impact the firms’ and their competitors’ innovative behaviour and ultimately the utility for the consumers.
