Effectivity of peace education (VLW135)

The objective of this report is two fold: a study of the feasibility and implications of effectiveness research in peace education, and an inventory of the findings of existing research in this field.
This report aims to provide a framework for effectiveness research, to interpret it, and to support it. It reflects the belief that this kind of study can help to advance peace education in at least three ways. For a start, it should stimulate debate about the goals of peace education. Secondly, it will test the empirical validity of existing theories regarding the mechanisms behind peace education, and thus integrate these theories back into practice. Effectiveness research can improve peace education; but as it also takes time, resources and expertise, it is probably not feasible to examine each and every project. Precisely for this reason, the existing research needs to be carried out to the highest standard possible. Thirdly, this type of effectiveness research will also eliminate a number of misunderstandings and persistent myths. The report thus seeks also to contribute to a critical approach to existing effectiveness research on peace education.
